How to Start a Blog:
So you’re thinking about starting a blog, but you don’t have any idea where to start, right? Guess what—neither did I. So, When I started out blogging, i was experimenting with different platforms, i tried blogger, joomla and finally i found WordPress.
But the good thing is, it’s easier than you think. I’ve learned a lot overtime through my failed past blogs (i thought i could do it all). And now you can learn from me without the hustle i went through.
Here we go;
Get your Domain
The first thing i did when starting my blog was register my domain. You can get one from Bluehost free or buy one from Godaddy. You do not need to manually set up anything, since Bluehost does all that for you.
Check if the domain you want is available
Well, they are CHEAP, and you can start a blog for as low as $3.95 and it also comes with a free domain
Choose Your Hosting Package
Every domain needs a server to connect to. Thats why you need a hosting plan.
Basically, “a host is a computer connected to the internet, its what enables your website or blog to be seen online”
After you Click Get Started, you will see the options below. Follow the prompts and voila you have your hosting.
Bluehost’s basic price is $2.75 to $3.95 a month, which works for 99% of people (go to this link to receive a 50% discount off the monthly price and a free domain).
You can also do a simple, free, “one-click” install of WordPress through Bluehost which makes starting your own blog super easy.
Since this article is focused on starting a successful blog, then there is no need to compromise on quality.
Set Up WordPress
Now that you have already got your account ( if you haven’t Click Here), install your WordPress in one click from the Bluehost Dashboard. (it will install automatically)
After setup, you will be directed to select a theme as you can see below;
NB: Select any one to get started
Choose a Theme for Your Blog
A good theme gives you the look and feel you want for your blog, allowing you to make a blog that looks exactly how you want it to look. If you’re not a developer, then a theme makes the design work easier. And once you purchase a theme, its yours for life.
You have options when choosing a theme; you can use the free WordPress themes, or buy a nicely crafted theme with a lot more features.
At WPKage i use Genesis which provides a necessary foundation for your Child Theme. Simply go to StudioPress and purchase the Genesis Framework and After you get your Genesis Framework, you’ll want to find the right Child Theme. WPKage uses the beautiful “GeneratePress” theme, which is available at GeneratePress.
Modify Your Blog.
Once you have your domain, hosting, WordPress, and theme, you have to spend some time tweaking the theme to get your desired look and feel.
Once the blog is ready, set up a free Feedburner account so people could subscribe to our site via email and RSS subscriptions and a free Google Analytics account to track our stats.
I use only a few plugins on my blog site: “Jetpack for WordPress”, Social Warefare, Yoast SEO and some more and they take just a few seconds to install once you’ve started your WordPress blog, and if you really want to use some cool plugins, check out Best WordPress Plugins.
Write Good Content
Finally, Now you can start writing and uploading the content for your pages: About Page, Contact Page, Start Here Page, etc. but Do not for get to put a logo (its how people will identify your blog) and now you can start writing new blog posts and publishing them regularly (at least once a week), accompanied by images.
